The 200807 game is a flat map with two towns only, plus 6 coal mines for making money with, and a power station for the coal drop. The intention is to build two huge cities with a passenger transport system.
This game uses two NewGRF packs from the openttdcoop GRF set 7.0: City stations, and US Train set version 0.87.3.
I built two money-maker coal lines independent of the passenger service. They just keep running in the background. The focus is on the passenger network.
The towns started with zero population, no buildings. I renamed the towns to North and South, and started laying the road grid and planning the routes that would take passengers to the inter-city express (ICE) terminals. The ICE terminals, one outside each city, are the only ones where pax are dropped -- pax coming from each city drop out of the network here. Small stations within each city transfer pax to the corresponding ICE terminal.
After I built the central transfer system, I set town growth to very high in the patch settings, setting it back to normal after the towns grew a bit.
The main point is designing an efficient transfer system. By game year 2014, one of the lines through South city, line 1W, carries 20+ short trains. The transfer trains are Acela HHP-8s with 5 pax wagons, while the ICE trains have the double-ended Acela Express with 12 wagons. Each of the wagons has a 40-passenger capacity.
South city has north-south transfer lines. A train enters at the south, stops at each station along the line, picking up pax. It exits at the north, goes to the ICE, transfers the pax, and loops back to the south.
North city has transfer trains dedicated to each station, and the stations are farther apart. But, many trains share a single line. Since fewer trains are required, this isn't a problem as of game year 2014.
By game year 2025, I've changed the patch setting so that engines are no longer made obsolete and unavailable. The Acela HHP-8s are lost, now replaced by DMUs. Also, North city's sunken rails are useless, and cause delays because of the tunnels. The rails are being raised to the same level as the rest of the city. The coal lines have been refurbished with AC8000s.
I played the game out to 2040, but the cities refuse to grow further. Oh, well. Screenshots:
