OpenTTD saved games: 200908

Saved games for 200908 (~r16903 and r16982 of OpenTTD).

(I started the game with r16903 of OpenTTD, but there was a bug where it crashed sometimes when trying to place stations. So I got r16982, and GY2037 onwards is with the new release.)

The August 2009 game is a randomly generated 256x256 temperate map, same as the July game.

This time around, I'm building a passenger-only network using the JapanSet trains (and the DB set, and NARS). The goal is to have a station in every town and grow every town, maybe to cover the whole map.

The first money-maker used trains that were too expensive to run, so I had to scrap the game. The next attempt resulted on 44 million by Game Year 2020, so I started the PAX network. The plan was to build an anti-clockwise Inter-City Express with feeder/commuters. The main ICE line would be Shinkansen (Maglev slot) and the rest would be electric rails.

After building the ICE, I built an eyecandy train depot (that's not nearly big enough to hold all the trains, but whatever). I'm using the N700 series Shinkansen engine with 12 wagons for a total length of 14 (TL7).

The ICE lines mix at 3 of the 4 stations, so that trains can jump between the two parallel tracks of the mainline. Only the last platform at each end of the station is reachable from the track on its side, the rest are reachable from either track.

Very important line from the Japan Set readme file: "Currently, the last car in a multiple unit train should always be a passenger car to get the proper graphics for the rear cab unit." I was wondering why my "DMU" trains weren't being MU'd (multiple unit-ed). So my feeder/commuter lines I'm using the E231 EMU with passenger cars attached. The running cost is higher but they load/unload faster ("commuter train"). This one is the fastest commuter at 120 km/h.

Connecting the commuter network is proving difficult, in GY2026, because most of the towns find my company "Appalling or "Very Poor" at best.

In 2037, all the towns were more or less connected to the Inter-City Express stations by commuter trains. Some towns still didn't allow complete station construction, so some buffers and in a couple cases, whole platforms, were missing. All that remains are tram stops for better coverage, and maybe a few feeder routes.

In 2046, I got bored and added mail trains to the ICE. Same engine, the N700, with 10 (not 12, to distinguish visually) mail coaches.

In 2106, the coal moneymaker engines, the K4 Pacifics, were replaced with EF200 engines to fit the pseudo-Japanese theme. By 2109, I got bored and started a tiny ICE system in the center, and by 2113 I had a valuables service between 3 banks. That one was based on EH200 engines with nine WAKI 10k cars per consist. Around 2156 I started moving some of the coal lines underground. As of 2195, many lines went underground, most of the cities have grown huge, and most of the commuter lines have at least 10 trains each. Somehow, Hardham has grown to over 100 thousand inhabitants.

By 2395, the cities were big enough to start lagging my computer, so I stopped. Note that many lines are underground, with brief open stretches for signals. Note, next time I build ICE, the feeder stations will be one-way and not terminus. It gives better throughput that way, when trains don't have to cross paths getting in and out.
